Over the following three days, the monsoon is predicted to move into Mumbai and a few other areas of the state, it continued.

News agency PTI quoted IMD scientist Sushma Nair as claiming that the southwest monsoon began over Maharashtra on May 20, 1999.

The southwest monsoon arrived early in Kerala on Saturday as well. It typically begins over Kerala by June 1 and moves on to Maharashtra by June 7 and Mumbai by June 11.

Early beginning and covering of wide regions on the first day itself is not unusual, according to M Rajeevan, a monsoon specialist and former secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

“A wider region in Karnataka and portions of Maharashtra was affected by the monsoon when it began in 1971. According to Rajeevan, the current active monsoon conditions will last until at least June 2 and will aid in the progress of the monsoon into Maharashtra and the eastern regions of the nation.
