Marathi language controversy erupted as the pair reportedly started harassing the delivery man, Rohit Lavare, to speak Marathi after he had come to serve a pizza.
A couple in Mumbai is accused of bullying a pizza delivery worker for not speaking Marathi in a video that has gone viral on social media. According to reports, the event happened on Monday in a city suburb and has rekindled discussions about forcing the local language
An NDTV story claims that the pair started forcing Rohit Lavare, the delivery guy, to speak Marathi after he had come to bring a pizza. The pair persisted even after Lavare made several attempts to clarify that he didn’t know the language. But they threatened to withhold payment if Lavare didn’t speak Marathi.
Marathi bolne ka zabardasti hai? Par kyun? (You cannot make me speak Marathi against my will. However, why?
Lavare challenges the woman, saying, “Kaun bola aise hi hai?” when she replies, “Hai yahan pe aise hi hai” (That’s how it is here). (Who makes this claim?)
Lavare is then heard expressing frustration by stating, “Nahi aata toh phir nahi order karne ka na.” Haan theek hai, theek hai, na paisa na dena hai. (You shouldn’t have placed the order if this was your requirement. Don’t you want to pay? Okay, okay.
When the pair allegedly refused to pay and claimed the meal was ruined, the argument apparently got out of hand. At one point, the lady is also seen claiming that she had the right to record the delivery agent, but that he could not video them.
Ultimately, Lavare was forced to depart without being compensated for the delivery.
Social Media Divided Over Marathi Language Controversy Involving Pizza Delivery Agent
The imposition of regional languages sparked controversy, and the video immediately acquired popularity. “Seeing such people makes me feel ashamed as a Marathi,” one person said. “Excellent point! This is India’s greatest shortcoming. Many people have an obsession with disparaging and sabotaging other Indians. “You cannot be patriotic unless you respect other people in the country,” said another user.
“As a native of Maharashtra, I take great pride in Marathi, our official language. However, this is completely incorrect,” a third user said. A fourth user added, “Shame.”
