- Hindi third language Maharashtra NEP 2020 rollout is a significant educational shift, as the state government mandates that students in classes 1-5 learn Hindi as a compulsory third language. This move aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, aimed at improving multilingual skills and enhancing education across the state.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will serve as the basis for the State Board’s curriculum, which will include Maharashtra-specific background for topics like geography, history, and languages.
Hindi is now a required third language in both Marathi and English-medium schools in grades 1 through 5, according to the Maharashtra school education department’s new curricular framework for school education, which is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Currently, only two languages — Marathi and English — are being taught as mandatory languages in classes 1 to 4, but with the introduction of Hindi third language Maharashtra NEP 2020, Hindi will now become a compulsory subject as well.
On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the State School Education Department released a Government Resolution (GR) addressing the new curriculum’s phased adoption in accordance with NEP 2020 guidelines.
According to the GR, at present, all schools in the State, except Marathi and English medium, follow the three-language formula, with a plan in place that Hindi third language Maharashtra NEP 2020 will make Hindi compulsory from classes 1 to 5, starting from Grade 1 in the upcoming academic year.
From the foundational stage through secondary education, the NEP 2020 proposals for the 5+3+3+4 school education framework will be incorporated. Grades 3 through 5 will be the preparatory stage, Grades 6 through 8 will be middle school, and Grades 9 through 12 will be secondary education. The foundational stage comprises the first five years, which includes pre-primary and Grades 1 and 2.
The syllabus of the State Board, aligned with the Hindi third language Maharashtra NEP 2020, will be based on the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), incorporating Maharashtra’s local context in subjects like History, Geography, and languages.
According to the GR, education has been based on five essential pillars from the foundation level to the degree level: accountability, quality, affordability, equity, and inclusivity.
