On Tuesday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reacted to reports of private schools raising their fee by a huge amount, assuring that the government would take stringent action against such schools. She asserted that official notices were being sent to schools following complaints from parents against unwarranted and excessive hikes in fees.
Gupta said several parents had come to her with their concerns regarding the Delhi Private School Fee Hike and reassured them that no school could harass families or make undue steep hikes in contravention of rules. “There are clear guidelines for fee increases. Any school found violating these will face action,” she informed journalists. She further stated that notices were being sent to all those schools which were mentioned in the complaints related to the Delhi Private School Fee Hike.
A group of parents earlier demonstrated against a recent fee increase in front of a private school in Dwarka. Additionally, they claimed that pupils were punished by being kept in the school library for 25 days. The “library arrest” has persisted since March 20, according to a parent.
Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood also weighed in on the Delhi Private School Fee Hike, announcing that an inspection team had just visited the Dwarka school following repeated complaints. He indicated that sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) across Delhi had been instructed to inspect schools and collect feedback using an 18-point questionnaire designed to determine whether schools were in compliance with fee rules related to the Delhi Private School Fee Hike.
Sood added that a committee including the director of accounting and the deputy director of education had been established to conduct additional investigation. Additionally, a special email address has been established for parents to protest about unwarranted cost hikes.
On Sunday, AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal denounced the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in connection with the Delhi Private School Fee Hike, accusing it of damaging the education system. Referring to the “Gujarat model” as an example, he alleged that the BJP was attempting to make the nation illiterate by promoting policies that ignore students’ welfare and allow unchecked fee hikes in private schools.
In response to recent school demonstrations, Kejriwal claimed that the BJP’s hold on Delhi had once again allowed so-called “education mafias” to take control of the city’s educational system. He questioned how schools could have the audacity to abuse children, blaming it on the relationship between political leaders and school administration.
AAP politician Manish Sisodia demanded a CBI investigation into the Delhi Private School Fee Hike, terming it “blatant looting through fee hikes.” Sisodia condemned private schools for increasing fees without permission, potentially shutting out students, even though there had been no increase in teachers’ pay or operating expenses. He reminded the public of one of the first reforms his government introduced when he became education minister in 2015: the regulation of Delhi Private School Fee Hikes to protect parents and ensure transparency in fee structures.
