Child sexual abuse in Kerala: The victim’s mother was arrested for murder and given five days in jail by the Aluva local court.
Kerala police said Thursday that a four-year-old child who drowned after being thrown into a river by her mother earlier this week was subjected to continuous sexual assault by her paternal uncle.
According to authorities, the examination of the body recovered from the Chalakudy river in the Ernakulam district early on Tuesday morning revealed indications of suspected sexual assault in the form of bruises to the minor’s private areas.
According to a Puthencruz police station officer, the victim’s father’s younger brother was taken into custody and charged on Thursday under the applicable provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (Pocso) Act.
Following many hours of interrogation during which he admitted to raping the youngster, the accused’s arrest was documented on Thursday. He shared a complex with the girl’s family, but resided in a different house. The officer stated that he will be brought before the Kolenchery district court.
All of the case’s evidence is being gathered, and the victim’s close friends and family members’ comments are being documented, according to Ernakulam Rural SP M Hemalatha.
Based on the doctor’s statement and the postmortem report, we filed the Pocso lawsuit. We are examining all of the case’s evidence, and the investigation started on Wednesday. “We’re recording the statements of a number of the victim’s close relatives,” she added.
In the meanwhile, the victim’s mother, who was taken into jail on Tuesday on suspicion of murder, was given five days of custody by the police on Thursday by a municipal court in Aluva.
The 35-year-old mother claimed to have gone missing while traveling when she picked up her kid from the neighborhood anganwadi on Monday morning and returned to her Aluva home in the evening, according to the police. Nevertheless, the police discovered CCTV footage showing the mother and her daughter crossing the Chalakudy River on their way to the Moozhikulam bridge. She acknowledged throwing her kid into the river during the ensuing interrogation.
Child Sexual Abuse in Kerala: A Dark Secret Hidden Behind Smiles and Silence
According to investigators, the lady has not given specific explanations for why she killed her daughter, even though her family carried out the last ceremonies on Tuesday.
Although she has so far cooperated with the investigation, she has not revealed the reason for the murder. We have taken control of her and started questioning her once more. The murder and the child’s sexual assault may or may not be related, according to Sony Mathai, the circle inspector for Chengamanad.
According to a teacher at the victim’s school, the local anganwadi, the youngster always appeared to be a “happy kid who loved to play with her friends and toys.”
There was no cause to believe that she was experiencing sexual abuse. Her expression showed no traces of fear or despair,” the teacher said.
